November/December 2018

Can you believe that November has come around again? We have an action packed few weeks ahead of us and so much to look forward to.

Halloween Disco

Our Halloween disco was a huge success, and I would like to extend a big thanks to our families who did a great job in creating costumes for their children. A great time was had by all, and we really appreciate your support.

Book Week Scotland

St Martha’s will be fully participating in the Book Week Scotland programme this week. We will be embarking on a selection of whole school, and individual class activities which will enthuse and engage all of our pupils in a celebration of Scottish literacy. On Friday 23rd November children are encouraged to come to school in their Pyjamas with a book and buddy (teddy) of their own. We would also be delighted to welcome all parents/carers into class between 09.00-09.45am to read with their children in school.

Enterprise Auction

As in previous years we will be have our Enterprise Auction in our classes. The simple idea is for the pupils to bring a toy into school which they would like to sell to other children. This learning links to Talking and Listening skills as the pupils will need to describe the best attributes of their toy to the prospective buyers. The Auction will be held on Thursday 22nd November and children are asked to bring a small amount of money into school on the day to enable them to buy something.

Parent Council

Our next Parent Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th December between 6-7pm. Please take this opportunity to come along and meet with your representatives and have your say on school community issues.

School Activities

Our Term 2 activities are well underway.

Primary 3 are receiving music tuition from the Creative Scotland Youth Music Initiative team, and are very much enjoying the experience.

As part of our commitment to interactive and outdoor learning, we have several class visits to Springburn Park scheduled for the month of November, and a new Monday afternoon Wildlife after school club in partnership with Froglife, a charity committed to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles and their associated habitats.

Pupils in Primary 2/1 and 3/2 will complete their dance sessions this week. To showcase their achievements they will be holding a short dance performance for parents/carers on Wednesday 21st November between 11.00-11.30am.

Also on Wednesday 21st November, Dogs Trust will be visiting the school to speak to pupils in Primaries 3,4,5 and 6 to raise pupil awareness regarding animal welfare.

The following day, Thursday 22nd November, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) will be holding talks and workshops with our P3 – P7 children. This is a tremendous charity that campaigns tirelessly to help end child abuse and empower young people by providing support, guidance and by making children aware of their rights.

Families Connect

Some of our Primary 1 parents have successfully completed the 8 week Families Connect programme, engaging in activities to help support their children’s learning and emotional development. Congratulations to all involved, and many thanks to Miss McGrory and Mrs Brady for their input.

Christmas

Our annual Christmas Fayre will be held on Friday 30th November. A range of fun activities planned and parents will be invited to join their children as they visit with their class throughout the day. Children are encouraged to bring some money to school on this day to buy snacks, toys and raffle tickets etc. In the run up to the Christmas Fayre, we are asking for donations towards a specifically themed class hamper to be raffled on the day.

Last year, we had some children who did not have money to spend, and to prevent any embarrassment to pupils, we are happy for children to bring in small amounts of money on the weeks leading up to the Fayre if they wish. This can be stored securely within the school and made available to the child on the Christmas Fayre day.

Barmulloch/Balornock Initiative will be holding their annual Christmas event at Barmulloch Community Centre on Friday 23rd November between 5.00-8.00pm with arts and crafts activities, music and soup and snacks. The tree lights switch-on at Wallacewell Road will take place at 6.30pm.

The pantomime ‘Beauty and The Beast’ has been booked to entertain our pupils on the afternoon of Thursday 13th December.

Preparation for our Christmas Celebrations is already well underway. Primaries 1, 2 and 3 will be practicing hard for their Nativity play over the next few weeks. This years’ play – ‘Born in a Barn.’ It is a vibrant, energetic show with lots of songs recounting the miracle of Jesus’ birth. Primary 1 will be our main actors with a supporting role from P2 and P3.

They will be performing on the afternoons of Monday 17th and Wednesday 19th December. The performance will commence with P4 – P7 singing a Christmas song and a Christmas Carol. (P4-P7 pupils will be staging a drama performance in the Spring).

We hope that as many parents as possible can come along to support the pupils throughout the Christmas Carol service and Nativity. The sale of tickets for the Nativity will be launched very soon.

Jesse Tree

In the spirit of Christmas giving we are appealing for small gifts, specified for a male or female, to be placed under our Jesse Tree over the advent period.  These will be distributed to residents of local care homes for the elderly. Wrapped gifts of socks, hats, gloves, and other non- perishable items are ideal and your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Immaculate Heart of Mary appeal

The Parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary are looking for donations towards their forthcoming Christmas raffle. If you have any unwanted gifts, or wish to make a donation of cash of prizes these can be handed in to Fr Morris or any member of the Parish fundraising team.

Kindest Regards

John O’Donnell
